What is family law? Family law encompasses many legal issues that are normally associated with separation and divorce. It is also known as matrimonial law and the law of domestic relations. A divorce is a termination of marriage and with that termination, many legal matters develop that fall under the umbrella of family law. Many of these legal matters induce stress and significant changes in the life of a family. The following family law issues may arise from a divorce, but are not limited to it:
- Adoption
- Alimony (spousal support)
- Child support
- Child custody
- Domestic violence (which would also intersect with criminal law)
- Emancipation
- Emergency custody
- Equitable distribution of property
- Separation agreements
- Paternity matters
- Post separation spousal support
- Prenuptial agreements
